Hey

I am currently looking at a used CNC test bed which has only 2 axes (X and Y axis) to be converted into a rapid prototyping test bed. FDM is what I am interested in for this usage. Anyways, there are two options to add as the Z axis on this current test bed:
1) adding the axis at the extrusion head (movable head with stationary platform)
2) adding the z axis at the platform (descending downwards as the model is created)

I need some advice on which option is a better one. Is it possible to create a 3D movement (X,Y,X axis) extrusion head for FDM application? So far, I have only discovered extrusion head (x,y axis) and the z-axis on the platform whereby the model is formed.

Please guide me through this challenge.

Thanks
