SLS finishing 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago
hello,

i have a quick query that i hope someone out there can help me with.

Im currently finishing some SLS prototypes and im spraying them in the colourways of my client. However upon application of the primer i seem to get a white coating all over the piece. I've tried switching to a different can of primer, changing other bits and bobs on the gun etc. I've never had this problem before and its got me stumped.

Im using cellulose based paints intended for the auto industry but having been using them for a couple of years with no problems.

the only thing i can think of is that the SLS is drawing the paint in and pushing any loose particles out?!

If anyone also knows of anywhere i can get acrylic or water based spray paints suitable for SLS prototypes...i'd be grateful

I finish SLS regularly at work, here is the process. 1: Spray off excess powder with powerful stream of air. 2: Bead-blast entire part with fairly strong (60-80 psi) pressure. This removes a lot of powder that air does not. 3: Since SLS is rather porous, 1-2 coats of primer are needed prior to paint. If you are worried about the part "growing" from multiple coats of paint/primer; try using a dye such as RIT (a common clothing dye) as your base instead of primer. Mix a strong batch, submerge parts, microwave 5-6 minutes and remove from dye to let dry.
